if only service was better September 10, 2008

The food is superb, there is no arguing with that. But when it comes to the service, I have to say that I have not been to anything this bad! When we entered the place I was full of high hopes of having a wonderful time. The place was great really, with everything from chairs and tables to the wall decorations telling you that it is like a pearl inside. Then it all began to be like in the movies, where one scene of disaster is followed by another and then another. First, we couldn’t seem to get anyone’s attention. There was no one ready to wait on us even when the place is not that full. Then after waiting for several minutes, we got a waitress who seems to be in a state of eternal smirk. Yes, she was smirking or at least that was the expression on her face for the entire evening. When we asked her something about their wine list, she seemed scared and got us the sommelier. All of that is ok if it did not take her more than ten minutes to get him. After our wine steward took our order for wine, it took our dear waitress another ten minutes to take our order. By this time I was really, really very hungry and some bread would have hit the spot right then, but our table seemed to be on the miss list as a far as the bread went. After much waiting again, our appetizers arrived but my friend Linda’s appetizer was missing so we had to wait again before starting with our meal. We could not let Linda watch us eat as she waits for hers to arrive, could we? When it did finally arrive, we all let out a big sigh of relief and devoured the appetizer like they were manna from heaven. I’m sure God did not have the Israelites suffer as much as we did in waiting for the food to arrive. Our main course was superb as I have said before, my lobster was just perfect. Another one of our friends, Ana’s stir fry dish was absolutely worth the wait, according to her. Linda’s tuna tartare is a delight which sort of made up for her delayed appetizer. By the time we finished our food, we were ready to forgive them everything. That’s how good they are. Their menu is kinda expensive but that was not something surprising since it is an upscale restaurant. We know that it is where the local hotshots and wealthy families dine out so we were ready to spend a little bit more. On the other hand, we realized that not being one of the rich patrons of the restaurant is the reason why we did not get a good service. Perhaps our waitress was thinking that we are just one of the tourists messing the place.

The Pearl is a restaurant that appears to have descended upon Nantucket from some other planet. It is out-of-sync with everything else on the island. The food is interesting, and overpriced. Tasty, and somehow unsatisfying. The ambiance is chic; service above average. Lots of celebs. The bar is very upscale. If the amount of money you spend for dinner matters not at all to you, this is a good place to start. Not one outstanding entree, but everything is above average. You pay for the privilege of dining there more so than for the food. Not my taste, but others would disagree, I am sure. Jack Welch, people like that...
