If you want great dinner, go to Straight Wharf. If you want casual drinking, go to Straight Wharf. If you want bar hopping, go to Straight Wharf. Yes, it is really a wonderful place to dine and to wine. The food is surprisingly delicious, considering that this is more of a bar. At least that’s the way I look at it, although others see it more as a restaurant. The snacks in the bar are also terrific. I cannot believe that I can actually have some of the most delicious seafood meal here in this casual and relaxed place. The only drawback for me is that on Saturdays the place is generally packed with the younger crowd who are out to have fun.

I dined at Straight Wharf again this August, after a few years away. The food has slipped badly. My striped bass was vastly overcooked, and the veggies were limp. The wine by the glass selections were insipid (I tried two). The service was strident, on the verge of aggressive and resentful. Countless offers to upsell -- not only to me, but to adjacent tables -- clearly on purpose. I found that distasteful. The ambiance remains terrific, but this is a restaurant that has slipped completely from where it was some years back. I would not recommend it on any level, except perhaps for drinks at the bar (though that is raucous later at night).
