Nantucket Weather

When it comes to the climate of Nantucket, its position thirty miles out at sea might suggest windy and rather chilly weather conditions, but in fact it is surprisingly mild. Because of its position out at sea it is actually closer to the Gulf Stream, and so benefits from the warmer waters, and warmer air blowing off the sea. However, there are times of course when the cold sea air can rip through the island, bringing blizzards and freezing conditions. However, if visiting during the summer months you are more than likely to experience a very pleasant temperature and mild conditions. One thing to note though is the fog. Nantucket’s nickname is the Grey Lady, and this is very much as a result of the unusual thick fogs which can suddenly and unexpectedly roll in across the island, before blowing away just as suddenly. This is not the onset of bad weather, but simply the result of a combination of geographical and climatic conditions.

Of course, with mild weather and copious beaches one might be tempted to pack little more than beachwear and a towel, but it is important to come prepared. Whilst beachwear will certainly be of use, it is very important to bear in mind that if walking through the more rural areas of the island you will need to cover up completely to avoid being bitten by insects. Many of the beaches are only accessible by walking through countryside, and so you’ll need to make sure you have suitable clothing for accessing the beaches as well as enjoying them. If you plan to walk through the island, suitable clothing will be important for the same reasons, and of course if you are hoping to dine out, very smart wear will be necessary as almost nowhere allows casual dress in Nantucket when it comes to sophisticated dining. During the off peak months and especially during the winter it will be essential to pack very warm clothes, jumpers and coats, since the conditions can become extremely cold very quickly.
